Non potevano esserci premesse migliori in vista delle prime gare del Tourist Trophy 2014 per Michael Dunlop. Figlio e nipote d’arte, già con 8 successi all’attivo all’Isle of Man TT e reduce da una trionfale edizione della North West 200, nelle conclusive qualifiche pre-gara del TT Superbike di venerdì 30 maggio il più giovane della dinastia dei Dunlop ha condotto la propria BMW S1000RR ufficiale schierata dal sodalizio BMM Motorrad UK/Hawk Racing davanti a tutti e ad un soffio dal primato assoluto del “Mountain Course”: 17’12″901 a 131.501 mph di media, poco più di 1″ sopra al record siglato lo scorso anno da John McGuinness in 17’11″572 a 131.671 mph. Sensazionale prestazione per “Micky D”, passato a TT in corso dagli pneumatici Metzeler a Dunlop, trovatosi a meraviglia con la 4 cilindri tedesca mostrando propositi ambiziosi in vista del TT Superbike in programma sabato 31 maggio, gara d’apertura del Tourist Trophy 2014. Michael Dunlop comanda dunque la graduatoria tra le Superbike, ma non è stato l’unico a viaggiare sopra i 130 mph: accanto a lui figurano Bruce Anstey, con la Honda CBR 1000RR Fireblade vestita dei colori Valvoline ed iscritta da Padgett’s Motorcycle a 130.642 mph, ma anche Guy Martin, terzo in graduatoria con la Suzuki GSX-R 1000 del teamm a 130.102 mph. Non distante da questi riferimenti il 20 volte vincitore al TT John McGuinness (CBR 1000RR Fireblade SP ufficiale di Honda Racing, 129.790 mph) ed un sempre più convincente Dan Kneen, con la Suzuki GSX-R 1000 del Cookstown B.E. Racing autore di un miglior crono a 129.107 mph davanti a Michael Rutter (Bathams BMW), William Dunlop (TAS Suzuki), Gary Johnson (Honda Lincs Lifting) e Johsua Brookes, 9° assoluto a 127.991 mph, candidato ad un TT da protagonista con la R1 di Milwaukee Yamaha. Tra gli attesi protagonisti il vincitore del Lightweight TT 2014 James Hillier completa la top-10 a 127.587 mph di media seguito dal mattatore dell’edizione 2010 Ian Hutchinson (127.422 mph), Dean Harrison (con la Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R preparata da MSS Performance ed iscritta dal RC Express Racing in 127.258 mph) e la seconda Honda ufficiale condotta da Conor Cummins. Positive conferme da parte del nostro Stefano Bonetti, 29° nella graduatoria Superbike (e 16° tra le Superstock) grazie al crono di 18’32.519 a 122.090 mph di media, a confronto con la Norton SG3 ufficiale condotta da Cameron Donald, 23° a 123.095 mph. Guy Martin Tra i “Newcomers” (esordienti al TT) conferma dell’ex protagonista del BSB Peter Hickman, addirittura 21° assoluto con la BMW S1000RR di Ice Valley by Motorsave Trade in 123.329 mph distanziando Martin Jessopp (Riders Motorcycles BMW, 119.918 mph). Da segnalare nel corso della sessione le cadute di Neal Champion (51°, Kawasaki Fraser Motorcycles) e Calum Laidlaw (78°, Honda Laidlaw Racing) rispettivamente a “Greeba Castle” ed al “Governors Bridge”: quest’ultimo se l’è cavata senza conseguenze mentre Champion è ora all’Ospedale di Noble per tutti gli accertamenti del caso.
