All’indomani della tragica scomparsa di Bill Currie e Kevin Morgan, equipaggio #15 dei Sidecar, i protagonisti del Tourist Trophy sono tornati in azione al “Mountain Circuit” dell’Isola di Man per la terza giornata (pardon, serata) di prove. Cielo coperto, ma per fortuna il tempo non ha riservato brutti scherzi consentendo ai piloti di girare con regolarità dalle 18:20 per le “Solo” (alternandosi tra le Superbike, Supersport e Superstock a disposizione) e dalle 20:00 locali con la sessione riservata ai Sidecar. Il mercoledì di attività all’Isola di Man ha comunque riservato non pochi colpi di scena, con diversi big come McGuinness, Martin, Farquhar, Michael Dunlop fermi lungo il percorso per problemi tecnici nelle varie categorie. Peggio è andata a Keith Amor, caduto con la sua Honda CBR 1000RR Superstock (mentre in Superbike difende da pilota ufficiale i colori di Honda TT Legends) a “Quarterbidge” rimediando la lussazione della spalla sinistra. Una successiva visita medica ha tuttavia portato buone nuove per il pilota scozzese, che salterà la giornata di prove del giovedì, ma l’indomani potrà tornare regolarmente in azione preparandosi alla prima gara del TT 2011 in agenda sabato alle 12:00. Chi non ha avuto di questi problemi è stato Bruce Anstey, che al primo TT con Padgett’s Honda ha spiccato il miglior tempo tra le Superbike in 17’27″29 a 129.695 mph. Insomma, già al mercoledì si viaggia spediti verso le 130 mph, con il “Kiwi” (7 vittorie all’attivo all’Isola di Man) che sembra aver trovato un gran feeling con la Honda CBR 1000RR preparata da Padgett’s vittoriosa lo scorso anno con Hutchinson tra Superbike e Senior TT. Anstey, recordman mondiale di velocità nel Road Racing con le 133.977 mph spiccate all’Ulster GP 2010, ha avuto ragione del suo successore in Relentless Suzuki by TAS Guy Martin, secondo con il personale 17’30.22 (129.333 mph), davanti a Gary Johnson che con le Honda dell’East Coast Racing sta davvero impressionando. In quarta posizione si ritrova invece Michael Dunlop, costretto alla resa a “Ginger Hall” per un problema tecnico alla propria Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R preparata dal Paul Bird Motorsport, formazione ufficiale di Akashi del Mondiale Superbike. Di certo non un buon segno per il figlio del compianto Robert Dunlop, comunque davanti in classifica a John McGuinness leader dei primi due giorni di prove con la Fireblade di Honda TT Legends. Il 15 volte vincitore al TT è così 9° in graduatoria preceduto anche da Michael Rutter con la Ducati 1098R del British Superbike, con il nostro Stefano Bonetti che è riuscito a migliorare i propri riferimenti cronometrici guadagnandosi in 18’39.71 (121.307 mph) la 15° posizione con la debuttante Kawasaki Superstock. Tra i “newcomers”, piloti all’esordio all’Isola di Man, continua a ben figurare la stella del BSB Simon Andrews, che dopo convincenti apparizioni al Macau Grand Prix (4° lo scorso anno con il podio in vista prima di un problema tecnico) e alla NW200 (era 4° tra le Superbike prima della bandiera rossa) è 20° assoluto con la BMW S1000RR del team Ice Valley. Per il dominatore del Road Racing 2010 non il massimo dopo la celebre “fumata” del propulsore alla North West 200 con la stessa moto… Scorrendo la classifica ottimo quinto Ian Mackman su Suzuki davanti a McGuinness, Stewart e Amor (come detto successivamente volato a terra), convince sempre più Stefano Bonetti che guadagna l’undicesima posizione in classifica con la top-10 obiettivo concreto per la settimana di gare. Davvero un tempone davanti al compagno di squadra in Wilson Craig Racing William Dunlop con Guy Martin (Relentless Suzuki), Dan Kneen (Yamaha del Marks Bloom Racing) e Bruce Anstey a seguire. Conor Cummins, in difficoltà tra le 1000 in questo suo ritorno in gara a seguito del tremendo crash al Senior TT 2009, riesce con le 600cc a ottenere l’ottavo crono davanti al leggendario (e suo datore di lavoro nel British Superstock 1000) Ian Lougher e Ryan Farquhar, mentre Stefano Bonetti porta la propria Honda in 21° posizione con il crono di 19’32.22 (115.873 mph). In fondo alla classifica John MccGuinness, fermato da un problema tecnico alla propria CBR preparata da Padgett’s Honda. Dopo pochi minuti, una nuova bandiera rossa aveva lasciato tutti in apprensione con Piotr Betles protagonista di un incidente alla “Signpost”, fortunatamente senza conseguenze. Per la classifica Klaus Klaffenbock, vincitore lo scorso anno affiancato dal passeggero Dan Sayle, si conferma dominatore staccando a 113.754 mph l’equipaggio composto dallo specialista Tim Reeves e Gregory Cluze (111.379 mph) avvicinati da John Holden/Andrew Winkle (111.066 mph). Va ricordato che i Sidecar disputeranno la prima gara nella giornata di sabato 4 giugno, anticipati alle 12.00 dalle Superbike.
